March 11, 2011---San Pedro, CA

At 10 am this morning we were at a McDonald's which was just off the freeway to meet one of my high school classmates in San Pedro. We had been friends over the years, so we were very interested in seeing her and where she lived. San Pedro is a city on the Los Angeles Harbor just south of Los Angeles.

We did a tour of the harbor and up the coast--She was a very good tour guide. The pictures below will tell you about our day.

One---The Fire Boat in the Harbor. It has 6 nozzles which can pump water
on a fire.

Two---S.S. Lane Victory
This ship is a merchant marine ship which transported 7000 Korean
Citizens to the South Korea area when the North Koreans were moving south.
It is hard to imagine this ship held 7000 refugees at one time.

Three---Walt got a tour of the ship's boiler room so we waited on the boat for him
to return. We waited for a good hour. When we left the boat we noticed the tsunami
had come in again. (It was the tsunami from the Japan Earthquake.) There had been another
tsunami at 8:30 am. This one left its mark on the shore but we did not feel it on
the ship.

Four---A sail boat in the harbor with deck hands on the top of one sail rigging.

Five---We did a cruise of the harbor at 2 pm. We had
to purchase a carry out meal at the Fish Marked so we
could take the tour at this time. There were many many
container ships being unloaded.

Six---The transfer of a container from the ship.

Seven---We walked thru the fish market and this is a parrot fish.

Eight---The Barrier Reef which was built to protect the harbor.
Note the fishing pier which on the harbor side.

Nine---Sail boats doing a club race outside the protected harbor.

Ten---One of the many outlooks along the shore line.
At one outlook there were whale watchers present to count the whales
moving to the north.

Eleven---We stopped at a Marine Animal Rescue Org, who rescued
injured marine animals and nursed them back to health for
release back in the wild or kept them until a zoo could care for them
when they could not go back to the wild.

Twelve---Mission
Maria Stella Maris
Traditional Roman Rite
Latin Mass Only

Thirteen---These are the rules for dress when attending Mass.

Fourteen---The Large Korean Bell presented to U.S. for the
rescue of refugees during the Korean War. It is called the
"Friendship Bell".

Fifteen---The sliding hills along the sea shore.
The owners are constantly loosing part
of their land due to land slides.

Sixteen---Entrance to the Trump Golf Course Club House
It was a beautiful golf course along the ocean.

Seventeen---The Wayfarers Chapel which was built in 1951 and
sponsored by the Swedenborgian Church is an unusual
church since it is made  almost entirely of glass.
The Chapel was designed by architect Loyd Wright, son of
the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It was inspired by the
cathedral like majesty of the redwood trees in northern California

Eighteen---Great view of a lighthouse on our
stops along the coast.

Nineteen---just a few of the houses on the shoreline overlooking
the ocean.

Twenty---On our way back to McDonald's we saw this church
in San Pedro. It is a Catholic Church.

This is the end of the day ---we left home at 8 a.m. and
returned home at 8 p.m.
